Chronic Hepatitis B Infection

In chronic infection, both IgM and IgG HBcAb may be present, though IgM levels will generally be low or undetectable. The persistence of HBcAb, even in the absence of acute symptoms, indicates ongoing HBV replication and the body's continued immune response.

Resolved Hepatitis B Infection

Once the infection is cleared, IgM HBcAb disappears. However, IgG HBcAb persists, marking lifelong immunity. The absence of HBsAg and the presence of anti-HBs (antibody to the hepatitis B surface antigen) and IgG HBcAb confirm resolution of the infection.

Hepatitis B Vaccination

After successful vaccination against hepatitis B, the individual will typically test positive for anti-HBs (antibody to the hepatitis B surface antigen) and may also have detectable IgG HBcAb. The presence of these antibodies indicates protection against future infection. IgM HBcAb is not present after vaccination.
